We are reminded today that there is indeed a last judgement at the end of the age. It may happen tomorrow or in a million years from now! In either case, we cannot walk around as if it were not going to happen at all! The idea of the Christian life is to continually draw near to Christ – to undergo Theosis – sanctification. We are called to become creatures who mostly resemble Christ verses anything in this world. Today’s Gospel reading from St. Matthew (25:31-46) give us a partial list of ways in which we walk toward Christ, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit those in prison, welcome strangers. I would add trusting God in all things and forgiving everyone everything with no exception. As human beings living in the modern world we are horribly distracted from the task at hand of being sanctified by God. We are fascinated by technology, even in church a number of us become occupied with our cell phone and social media – all serving as terrible temptations and distractions from God. As we draw closer and closer to the Great Lent – may God bless us and strengthen us as we fast from all animal products as our health allows – but don’t simply disregard the fast. Read Scripture – especially Genesis, Isaiah, Proverbs and the Psalms as these are the main readings in the Church during Lent. Give of your wealth in thanks giving to God. Remember the widow who give one mite – all of her wealth (Mark 12:41-44). Focus on doing charity this Lent – only do not let your left hand know what your right is doing (Matthew 6:3). Seek to put away the terrible distractions – turn off the television, the social media (we are not that important anyway) – sit in silence for 20-30 minutes each day. Focus on our salvation by always striving to draw closer to God – good and faithful servant!
